Stress-Free Family Travel: Top Essentials to Pack When Jet-Setting with Kids
Traveling with kids? Brave.
Flying with kids? Bold.
Flying with kids and actually enjoying it? Now that’s the Wander Barefoot way.
Whether you’re off to a tropical escape, squeezing in a weekend getaway, or venturing overseas with toddlers in tow, packing smart is everything. I’ve been there — backpacks bursting with snacks, boarding passes tucked in every pocket, a toddler on each hip… and still somehow forgot the one thing we actually needed.
So let’s make your next trip smoother from the start. I’m sharing my personal go-to list of family travel essentials — the things that keep tantrums low, spirits high, and travel days feeling (almost) effortless.
The Top 10 Essentials for Stress-Free Family Jet-Setting:
1. Snacks. ALL the snacks.
You could be flying first class to paradise, but if your kid is hangry at 35,000 feet, no one’s having a good time.
Pack variety: crackers, fruit snacks, protein bars, squeezable applesauce, and yes — one "forbidden treat" to whip out during those mid-flight meltdowns. 🍫✨
2. Reusable Water Bottles
TSA won’t let you through with full ones, but once past security, fill them up.
Hydration = fewer headaches (for everyone) and fewer expensive drinks at the airport. Bonus points for spill-proof bottles with built-in straws. 💧
3. A “Surprise Bag” of Entertainment
This is my secret weapon. 👩🔫
Wrap small toys, coloring books, sticker sets, or magnetic puzzles and pull them out one by one mid-flight. The surprise factor buys you more time than you'd think. 👌
Great for toddlers and even school-aged kiddos who need screen breaks.
4. Headphones Made for Kids
You’ll thank yourself when the iPad volume doesn’t blast during takeoff.
Look for kid-sized headphones with volume limits (and comfort for naptime slumps). 🎧
5. Change of Clothes — for EVERYONE
Not just the kids. 🙃
Accidents, spills, turbulence + juice = a recipe for regret if you don’t pack an extra top for yourself too.
6. Lightweight Blanket or Large Scarf
For cozy naps, chilly cabins, or impromptu playmats at the gate.
I personally swear by a soft Turkish towel — it folds small, looks cute, and works for everything. 🨣
7. First-Aid Pouch (Kid Version)
Tiny boo-boos feel BIG in the sky.
Bring band-aids, motion sickness chewables, child-safe pain reliever, hand sanitizer, and wipes. Lots of wipes. Antibac, face wipes, booty wipes — just trust me. 🧹Bring band-aids, motion sickness chewables, child-safe pain reliever, hand sanitizer, and wipes. Lots of wipes. 8. Tablet Loaded With Downloads
Planes = zero Wi-Fi unless you pay extra.
Before your trip, download movies, shows, and games (educational or just fun — no shame).
Don’t forget chargers + a battery bank! 🔋
9. Travel Documents in a Zipper Pouch
One pouch. Everything inside: passports, boarding passes, medical cards, and hotel info.
Peace of mind = knowing where everything is when you’ve got a kid clinging to your leg. 🛬
10. A Whole Lot of Grace
Because something will go sideways. It’s okay.
You’re building memories, not perfection. Let go of the pressure and soak up the sweetness between the chaos. 💛
💡 Bonus Tips for the Plane:
Board last if your seats are assigned — less time wrangling kids in cramped aisles.
Give kids a “job” (carry their lovey, choose their snack) to help them feel included.
Pre-load Google Maps or download your travel app just in case airport Wi-Fi fails.
